Following on from a recent MCSI meeting that generated ideas on dealing more effectively with homeless and vagrants moving through our area, a joint operation with MCSI, SAPS and GRIT was held last week to identify people moving into the neighbourhood on “bin day”.
2 MCSI patrollers, 3 GRIT patrollers and 6 SAPS officers profiled bin pickers in the area, obtaining individuals’ details and checking for any outstanding warrants (fortunately there were none). The individuals were then asked to move out of the area.
MCSI advocates knowing your neighbour as a safety measure, and operations like this are an extension of this approach. If there are people coming to the area who do not normally live here, let’s know who they are and what their intentions are – and with assistance from SAPS, find out how cautious we need to be. These individuals did leave the area when asked, but soon returned again. The benefit of an operation like this, however, is that we are now aware as patrollers who is in our area, and these people are aware that we pay attention in this neighbourhood!
This exercise will be repeated at intervals in the future.
Many thanks to GRIT and Muizenberg SAPS for making it possible!
